Did you know that 1 hour of structured walking is more stimulating and tiring to a dog than 3 hours on the loose in a field?
Daycare should not be synonymous to a free for all in a field or sitting in someone’s lap all day long. Mental stimulation and enrichment activities are key. Simply having a human present, is not daycare.
For a dog to be happy they need:
mental stimulation
structure/leadership
independence
Dog daycare the right way
What is a structured walk?
A purposeful, guided walk where the dog follows commands and cues from the handler rather than pulling ahead, sniffing wherever it likes, or setting the pace. Think consistent heel position, controlled pace changes, and calm behaviour at distractions like other dogs or people. It's less about exercise alone and more about reinforcing leadership, focus, and calm, confident behaviour.
This is recommended for dogs with excess energy, anxiety, or reactivity issues.
Remember Corona? The virus? It was this little bug that made us move to Sandgate (Kent, UK) and get 2 Siberian husky puppies. I didn’t know it then, but it changed our lives. Decent dog daycare was impossible and it is what led me to start Onslow’s. Onslow is the name of my first dog by the way. This is my way of honouring him. I was too young to fully understand dog ownership then but boy did I love him.
My story.
Like so many of us, I was on a corporate path. Working in advertising for big brands, big agencies. Work hard, Play hard… but for what? After my 3rd midlife crisis it was time to turn things around and start my own business. I’ve been wanting to work with animals since I was a kid (40 years ago now) BOOM. Hello Onslow’s. This is the beginning of Onslow’s and I’m very excited to build this pet service together with you.
My path.
We’re keen believers that music makes a dog’s world go round.
